How to choose a pig feeder?
Feed costs account for more than 70% of the cost of raising pigs, so the choice of pig feeder is very important. How to make every pig get the feed it needs and minimize waste is an issue that should be considered when designing and selecting pig feeders.
The first question that a pig farmer or a pig farmer thinks about is what kind of pig feeder do I want, and how many pigs can I use in this feeder?
Here, I would like to introduce the concept of feeding position. A feeding position is the feeding trough space occupied by a pig.
So the question becomes how to evaluate the quality of the feeding spots and how many pigs can be used by each feeding spot.
1
Quality of feeding position
1, pig shoulder width +10% feeding position, recommended width =6.7(cm)* body weight (kg)^0.333
30kg corresponds to 20.8cm, 60kg corresponds to 26.2cm, and 33cm corresponds to 120kg
2. Deep feeding position
Fattening pigs 10-20cm fattening pigs 25-30cm fattening one 25-30cm fattening
3. Edge height
Raising pigs 5-10cm Raising pigs 10-15cm raising pigs 10-12cm Raising pigs 10-12cm
4. Whether there is a block between the food positions
When 1.1 times the shoulder width was achieved, there was almost no fight in the way of the pig's shoulder, and the average fight rate in the way of the head was around 7 percent, compared with 19 percent if the head was not blocked. The data also showed that the least amount of feed was wasted on the pig's head or shoulder. That's why some experts don't recommend using tube feeders.
In addition, many experiments on wet and dry feeders show that it is good for the production effect. One point should be paid attention to when using wet and dry feeders. The water pressure of wet and dry feeders is lower than that of drinking water machines, which is generally 70Kpa in 140Kpa.
2
Each feeding position can supply several pigs.
Typically, there are about 5 pigs per feeding location, and a single cell feeder can manage 40 pigs.
What determines how many pigs are supplied to each feeding site, and the time or speed at which each pig feeds each day, is key. Dr. HaroldGonyou provided the following data (fattening pigs) in a 2000 report.

In fact, the maximum supply of pig heads is when pigs are fed 24 hours a day, which affects daily weight gain and meat ratio. Another experiment showed that the wet and dry feeders had a meat quality ratio of 10 pigs per feeding site of less than 20 pigs.
There is another phenomenon that needs to be noted. In fact, the feeding time of pigs decreases with age and weight. This trend is also reflected in the data we obtained using the Auburn measuring equipment.

There are two issues to consider:
Feed waste rates may be higher when pigs are young, and does the feeder setup need to be more pig oriented?
The feeding time of pigs is longer, and sometimes insufficient feeding location occurs when the pigs are younger.
In general, it is recommended to supply a number of pigs per feeding position:
1. Each dry level can feed 8-10 pigs;
2. Each wet and dry feeder can feed 12 pigs;
3. Tube feeders (widely used in China) The PIC manual recommends 11 pigs per side. Based on the length of the tank, 51mm per pig is actually much lower than our current standard of 30-35 pigs per tank.
I have consulted on the selection of Dr Slots. HaroldGonyou, his views mainly have the following points for your reference.
1. In order to increase feed intake, it is best to use wet and dry feeders to improve the feed intake of powder, which has little effect on particles.
2. Pipe feeders can increase the number of battles, but the experimental results seem to be good.
3. Pay attention to the size of the feed level to meet the maximum needs of pigs (see the specific indicators above)
4, the number of pigs per feeding tube should be considered according to the feeding speed of pigs.
Personal recommendation follow-up best use stainless steel tank, between each tank has an effective baffle to the head, each tank can slightly reduce the index of a few pigs, on the daily gain and meat ratio is still helpful. After all, the one-time cost input of the long-term feed cost is very limited compared to the feeder.
